To truly appreciate Malaysia’s cultural landscape, you will first have to understand Malaysia history and the diversity of its ethnic people. They are the two largest components of Malaysia culture. The Straits of Melaka was an important trading centre, along the ancient East-West maritime route. During its heydays, settlements around the Strait attracted scores of immigrants from around the world.

Subsequently, interweaving between foreign immigrants and locals culminated in a complex mix of religion and tradition. Convoluted by the passage of time, it resulted in a unique amalgamation of Malaysia culture. From tradition to heritage, the multicultural influence is apparent and profound. The cultural footprint extends to every aspect of Malaysian life, including Malaysia food, even architectural design :-

Arts and Crafts

Colourful Malaysia Batik

The roots of Malaysia art and craft retraced about 2,000 years of history. Immensely influenced by its multicultural past, it ranges from carving and weaving, to painting and printing. Perhaps the most sought after creative items are carved handicrafts from Borneo and hand printed or woven fabric from East Coast Peninsula Malaysia.

Hand made fabric, like songket or batik is commonly used to make traditional Malay clothes. Worn during special occasions and functions, it is popular with local and Western women, mostly due to its beautiful design and cultural charm.

Food

Malaysia is blessed with predictable weather, fertile land and bountiful oceans. Tropical produce and catches are complemented appetizingly by the cooking variety of its multicultural people. The result is an extensive assortment of mouth-watering Malaysia food, garnished with multicultural tastes, colours, aromas, and textures.

Architecture

It is often said that the soul of a nation is embodied in its architecture. Malaysia architecture mirrors the cultural influence of its people, where belief and preference shift with time.

From traditional homes to magnificent skyscrapers, it tracks Malaysia’s historical passage – from its ancient beginning and colonial past, till its transformation into a modern society.

Cultural Do's and Don't's

What is culturally correct in some countries may not be in others. Malaysians are known for their warmth and friendliness. However, it’s best to take heed of common Dos and Don’ts in Malaysia culture. After all, there is a saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”!
